Musical Delights S.R. Riley's Musical Cafe now singing in Bridgeton
Walk through S.R. Riley's Musical Café and you will undoubtedly get lost in all of the Beatles memorabilia and pictures of John, Paul, Ringo and George that cover the walls.

But for Sandi Riley, owner of the Beatles-themed, Bridgeton restaurant with her son and chef Brett Riley, there is one piece of art on the wall behind the cash register that means the most to her.

"It's a painting of my husband by Millville artist Dawn Kohansky," Riley says. "He passed away, and all of this Beatles memorabilia was his. It's our way of keeping him with us every day."

Even before Riley's husband passed, she had plans for a restaurant. A former elementary-school teacher, Riley's catering business - still a staple for S.R. Riley's bottom line - led her to dream of a permanent home where her food could be served daily instead of just on special occasions.

"(Parties by Sandi) started when I was still teaching," she says. "It grew to a second full-time job. So the plan was to retire early, keep the benefits and maybe have a place where I could do catering and have blackboard specials every day. After my husband passed away, we started to think about taking the idea even further. Brett went to culinary school, and we wanted to work together. And then we started to think about all of the Beatles memorabilia. It was in my husband's den, our attic, everywhere. This building became available, and that little idea I had expanded more than we originally anticipated."

When S.R. Riley's opened in 2005, it was a major investment in a city where approximately 20 percent of households make less than $10,000 a year. Riley believed then - as she does now - that Bridgeton will see a renaissance like neighboring Millville, and she's determined to lure out-of-towners looking for a dining experience that not only includes a Beatles theme, but great homemade American cuisine and desserts.

S.R. Riley's focuses on keeping things simple, fresh and comfortable, and the clever menu features headers with Beatles songs.

"A Beginning" features appetizers like Sgt. Pepper Poppers and the Ringo Basket (onion rings). "All Together Now" offers chicken corn chowder and French onion soup. "Strawberry Fields Forever" boasts salads including the Cape May Fare with grilled or blackened tuna.

For entrees, seafood items are listed under "Octopus's Garden," like the popular grilled crab cakes and broiled stuffed flounder. "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey" is where you'll find meats like Jack Daniel's BBQ Strip Steak. Look for chicken dishes under "Free as a Bird," including the Summer Chicken with sautéed spinach, sundried tomato, Romano cheese and a white-wine garlic sauce. There's pasta under "The Long and Winding Road" and, of course, there are Beatles Burgers.

"Our crab cakes are the No. 1 seller," Riley says. "We will not substitute any type of crab meat. It is always consistent … like all of our food."

Riley loves that her restaurant is more than just a place to grab a bite, but an overall dining experience where you discover placemats that look like record albums and Beatles trivia cards to pass the time between courses. It's a place where you can sit back and listen to some great Beatles music and maybe even teach your kids a thing or two about music made long before they were born.

"But even if you don't like the Beatles, it's a place you can really enjoy," Riley says. "I try to keep the music so it's not too loud. I had a lot of people tell me they don't like the Beatles but would come back again."

While Riley certainly has learned her share of Beatles knowledge, it may surprise you that she's not as big as a fan as you think she would be.

"I used to always tell my husband, 'Do we have to listen to this again?'" Riley says with a laugh.

"Now, we're listening to it every day, all day long. It's ironic. But I've become a bigger fan over the years. And Brett will even come out when it's slow and play a song on his guitar. We have fun with it."

What makes this place

so special ...

The Beatles memorabilia (right)

S.R. Riley's Musical Café is like a miniature Beatles museum. With a full drum kit, autographs by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, signed albums and posters from renowned "Revolver" cover artist Klaus Voorman, dolls, figures, books and the original Beatles album with drummer Pete Best, it's a cool place to look around. "For us, it's more about my husband's collection," Sandi Riley says. "For everyone else, it's about the Beatles."

Must-try items

Whether as a sandwich or entrée, S.R. Riley's crab cakes are definitely worth sampling, as is the filet Oscar, served with asparagus and topped with jumbo lump crabmeat and a béarnaise sauce. The chicken portabella is lightly crusted, chargrilled and topped with a roasted portabella mushroom in a veloute sauce. But if you're looking for something simple, have the Ringo burger with Jack Daniel's BBQ sauce, American cheese and an onion ring and one of Riley's famous, unique milkshakes.

Dessert

Sandi Riley is really proud of her homemade desserts, and she should be. Her carrot cake features six layers of cake and icing. The fudge brownie contains vanilla ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauces, and the dessert sampler is for the table that likes to share and can't decide. Every day, Riley features two daily choices. Past favorites include whipped chocolate cream pie, apple dumplings and a chocolate cobbler with vanilla ice cream.... More
