Come to the Cabaret Comedy and music featured in Cape May
By REBECCA GRITES For At The Shore, 609-272-7017
Published: Apr 3, 2008
As Bob Dylan once sang, "The times they are a changin'" - and that's exactly what's happening in southern New Jersey. This weekend, be a part of some new, upcoming and everlasting changes in the nightlife scene across Atlantic and Cape May counties.

For starters, be a part of one of the areas "first ever" events - Cape May's Diversity Weekend Cabaret. The cabaret is being held by Gables of Cape May County on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5. The event will be taking place at one of Cape May's hottest nightspots, Carney's, which is located on Beach Avenue and Jackson Street.

This cabaret event is a comic and musical weekend where big names come together to make you laugh and sing - sometimes at the same time. Friday night gets started with comic Mimi Gonzalez and jazz vocalist Gina Roche. Gonzalez will have the privilege of being joined by Terri White, who is from the original Broadway cast of "Barnum." As for Friday night's headliners, cabaret veteran Lennie McKenzie, who is known across New York City for playing some of the top venues, like Rose's Turn and Don't Tell Mama, will appear.

Saturday night will feature Adam Sank, best known for his snarky jabs on VH1's weekly funfest of a show, "Best Week Ever." Sank is also co-author of Esquire's book, "Things A Man Should Never Do Past 30." Joining Sank on Saturday night will be special guests magic man Robert Aberdeen, singer Shelley McPherson and impersonator Joanna "The Gal Of A Gazillion Voices." Michael Isaacs will perform his musical hilarity and insanity both evenings. ... More

Weekend of Remembrance Locals remember late poet, hot spots
It's a weekend of remembrance in southern New Jersey, beginning with Bogart's Books and Music as it remembers former local poet Bill McLaughlin, who died in an automobile accident nearly 40 years ago.

Mark Soifer, fellow poet and friend of McLaughlin's, will be reading selections of McLaughlin's works as well as his own in honor of the late poet's dedication and importance not only to the poetic arts but to all facets of the art world. McLaughlin's book, "Conspiracies of Love and Death," which was published by Ohio State University Press in 1970, will be referenced throughout the event.

McLaughlin and Soifer were also founding members of Contemporary Poets of South Jersey, a group that was known to meet in Pat Witt's Barn Studio of Art in Millville, along with A.R. Ammons, who is considered a major poet of the 20th century.

This event will take place at Bogart's on Sunday, March 30. The poetry readings will begin at 2 p.m., and admission is free.

Another form of remembrance can only come through classic tunes and your favorite pair of dancing shoes. On Sunday, March 30, get ready for a reunion of friends of the Chez Paree, Saratoga, Brass Rail, Studio 6, Rendezvous Lounge and many other Atlantic City 1970s and 1980s nightlife hot spots. "Meet Me at the Chez Paree" will feature celebrity DJs, bartenders from the past, a surprise guest star and even a red carpet.

"Meet Me at the Chez Paree" begins at 6 p.m. and is taking place at Déjà Vu nightclub -formerly known as the Chez Paree - located at 245 S. New York Ave., Atlantic City. Admission is $20 per person, and there will be a cash bar with $3 and $4 drink specials, as well as 50/50 raffles.

Proceeds will benefit the South Jersey AIDS Alliance, which is headquartered in Atlantic City and is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting HIV and AIDS. You can visit the SJAA Web site at www.southjerseyaidsalliance.org or call 800-281-AIDS. You can also purchase advance tickets from the SJAA's Web site. Partnering in this event are the United Way of Atlantic County and Manna By The Shore. For more information on this fun yet purposeful event, call Jeanne Covert at 856-285-4055, or e-mail Covert at jeannec@sjaids.org.

While remembering the past, whether it be through poetry or great music, there is one 1980s artist whose name stands out against many of his contemporaries, and that's Rick Springfield. With possibly one of the most well-known '80s anthems, "Jessie's Girl," Springfield was an adored musician who can still be heard on radios and in dance clubs to this day.

Springfield will visit Borgata's mixx in Atlantic City on Saturday for an after-show after party. Springfield will play a few of his hits like "Love Somebody," "Don't Talk To Strangers" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" and DJ Devera will be providing the dance music for all guests and Springfield to enjoy. For more information, call 609-317-1000.

Last but not least for this weekend of remembrance, Avril Lavinge is a name that hasn't faded too strongly from the limelight yet, but nevertheless, she's coming to Borgata's mur.mur, and that's definitely something you won't want to forget. Avril will be hosting her own after-show dance party at mur.mur with the help of DJ Sky Nellor. The party starts at 10:30 p.m.

Call the Borgata at 609-317-1000.

The area's leading Jimmy Buffett cover band, Parrot Beach, will be performing for the Fantasy Concert Series, which pays tribute to legendary performers. This show is sponsored by The Shark, Classic Rock 103.7-FM and is sure to be an evening of great fun and great music.

You'll be thrilled to hear favorites like "Cheeseburger In Paradise," "Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes," plus many, many more all evening long.

This is the first of a series of tribute acts at the Hilton's Theatre, which will take place every Saturday unless there are headliners. Future acts will pay tribute to The Doors (March 29), David Bowie (April 5) and Bruce Springsteen (April 26).

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door on Saturday night. Call 609-347-7771.

Also this weekend, Billy Harner, known locally as "The Godfather of Blue Eyed Soul," will make an appearance at the New Revelations Music and Novelty Shop on High Street in Millville.

Harner is man of many musical tastes as well as nicknames; you may know him as "The Human Perkulator," or just "The Perk." These were names given to him by famed Philadelphia DJ Hy Lit. Harner has recorded on MGM and Paramount records, Cameo Parkways Records, and the near and dear to the heart of southern New Jersey, Shoutback Records, which is based out of Millville.

Some of Harner's most well-known songs include "Message To My Babe," "She's Almost You," "I Struck It Rich," "Sally Sayin' Somethin" and "Homicide Dresser." You can hear Harner play these favorite tunes, plus many new ones off his latest album, "Billy Harner: The Human Perculator, Then, Now and Forever," at New Revelations on Friday, March 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. Call 856-765-1320.

Last, but not least is a man less focused on music and more focused on … mortgages?

That's right, even you partygoers need to figure out your finances at some point. And what better way to do it than to pay a visit to Bogart's Books in Millville, where you'll be able to meet and greet David Petrovich, who will be signing copies of his new book, "Fight Foreclosure: How To Cope with a Mortgage You Can't Pay, Negotiate with Your Bank and Save Your Home."

Petrovich is known for his column work in The Gazette of Atlantic and Cumberland counties. He's also been in the real estate business for more than 20 years - this guy knows his stuff. Petrovich will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

But Bogart's couldn't possibly let a Friday fly by without some solid rock 'n' roll, so they are bringing out Dark Hollow, which will be playing from 9 to 10 p.m., after Petrovich's Q&A session.

And as always, for the month of March, abstract and oil paintings by the featured artist of the month, Augustus Zimmerman, will be on display for your viewing pleasure. Call Bogart's at 856-327-3714.
