Hamilton Committee increases tax levy
By MICHELLE LEE Staff Writer, 609-272-7256
Published: Apr 8, 2008
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - A cut in state aid might have residents paying more taxes in the upcoming year.

Under Gov. Jon S. Corzine's proposed budget, Hamilton could lose $254,000. To make up the difference, the Township Committee unanimously agreed to increase the tax levy in the proposed $23.9 million municipal budget Monday night.

The local tax rate would go up another two cents to 10.7 cents per $100 of assessed value. The average property owner would now expect to pay an extra $111.28 in taxes. Township Administrator Edward Sasdelli said the initial spending increase is due to a number of factors, including higher costs for employee pensions and health care.

The Township Committee deliberated for more than
30 minutes over a list of of 11 "non-mandatory" expenses, such as Christmas decorations and the Hometown Celebration, trying to figure out which ones to transfer to fill in the state aid gap. The township faced another unexpected expense: finding $17,400 for the 29 volunteer firefighters who signed up for the Length of Service Awards Program, or LOSAP, which provides pensions. ...

Who’s got game? No one ... for awhile

Who's got game?

No one ... for awhile

Margate's Jerome Avenue courts are one of Atlantic County's basketball hotspots, but it will be awhile before anyone shoots any more hoops on the courts. Workers cut down the four baskets Friday as part of an ongoing project to renovate the city's whole complex of courts, fields and playgrounds fronting on Jerome Avenue.

The contractors from Highway Safety Systems also started tearing up the courts, which needed to be replaced because they were badly cracked and torn. And they pulled out the bases of the metal poles that used to hold up the old-fashioned metal backboards and baskets.

No one knows exactly when outdoor basketball will be back in business because to put down the new paving, the contractors need the weather to cooperate, City Commissioner Dan Campbell says. Temperatures have to be consistently in the range of 50 to 60 degrees,
including at night, to do the repaving right, he explained.

In other parts of the $1 million project, workers have taken out the old equipment from the two playgrounds and have started work on the tennis courts. Most of those courts will just be resurfaced, but one has to be torn out and replaced, Campbell says. Plus the job will include replacing an old tennis practice area with a new, enclosed court for a game called platform tennis.... More
