Bank exec tells legislators to expect economic turnaround in 2009

TRENTON - The chief economist for the state's largest bank told the state Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Wednesday that the current economic slowdown will last through this year but begin to turn around in 2009.

"This will likely be your toughest budgeting year, but it is also the most critical," said Commerce Bank Chief Economist Joel L. Naroff, who advocated the senators explore a mixture of spending cuts, limited spending increases and revenue enhancements.

"Failure to deal with the expanding fiscal problem could dig the state so deep into a hole that its competitive position would be damaged for an extended period of time," he said.

Like elsewhere in the country, Naroff said the poor housing market hurt construction and manufacturing while losses in the financial sector only compounded problems. But despite problems, he said he does not expect a severe downturn.... More
