LATEST NEWS: Atlantic City employee unions stick to 'no-conessions' stance in meeting on budget crunch
By MICHAEL CLARK, Staff Writer, 609-272-7204
Published: Jan 05, 2009

ATLANTIC CITY - Six city labor unions reaffirmed their "no concessions" stance before resort attorneys in an introductory meeting. Robert O'Brien, an attorney for a law firm that represents four of the organizations, said modifying existing contracts was not a current option, but an open dialogue is a welcomed change. Renegotiation is "not on the table right now," O'Brien said shortly after the meeting. "But that doesn't mean there can't be productive discussion." The meeting was called by the Langford administration last month to begin discussions about the city's dire financial position and float the possibility of renegotiating existing contracts. However, O'Brien said renegotiation was barely discussed at the meeting, nor were specifics about areas the city is targeting to save money. Instead, the city focused on providing information to the six labor leaders about the budget's condition. The meeting was planned after city officials learned preliminary budget figures show a $15 million budget gap, arguably the worst budget the resort has seen in a quarter century. Revenue and Finance officials have cited the 4 percent raises that police, fire and City Hall workers received in 2007 as part of the problem. But union presidents, after learning of the administration's plan to reopen negotiations, scoffed at the idea. "There's not a long history of trust here," O'Brien said of past administrations, with the exception of Council President William Marsh, who negotiated the current contracts as acting mayor. "We made it clear that if they would like to break this previous cycle of mistrust, they need to make us partners." Mayor Lorenzo Langford did not attend the meeting. The city was represented by City Solicitor Robert Tarver and assistant attorney Steven Glickman. They were not immediately available for comment after the meeting.
