Published: Jan 05, 2009

VINELAND - Cumberland County's new all-Democratic freeholder board officially took office Sunday, marking one of the largest changeovers in the seven-member board's history.

Freeholders Jim Dunkins, Jane Jannarone, Bill Whelan and Nelson Thompson took their oaths of office before more than 200 people at Cumberland County College. U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., administered the oaths before an audience that included Gov. Jon S. Corzine and state Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem.

Freeholder Lou Magazzu won the other six freeholders' votes as freeholder director for the second time, while Freeholder Joe Pepitone was named deputy director.

Menendez called the board members an "exceptional group of public servants" and pledged to work with freeholders in the future, including supporting renewed federal funding for the Cumberland Empowerment Zone. More
