Here come the cuts; NJ snips budget here, there, everywhere
By DEREK HARPER, Statehouse Bureau, 609-292-4935
Published: Jan 05, 2009

3:19 p.m. Update - TRENTON – New Jersey will spent $47 million aiding renters. Reduce Homestead Property Tax Rebates by $35 million. And lop $257,000 from the state Mosquito Control Commission.

The state released $812,199,000 in cuts to the current year budget Monday afternoon, taking money from accounts across the state.

The biggest reduction comes from state pensions, where the state will reduce this year’s commitment by $115.6 million. But the list, with millions of dollars taken from closed-out contracts and various funds, at times seems like the state budget equivalent of a person looking under sofa cushions for money.

The state will save $2,000 in unspecified ways in the Department of Commerce and Economic Development central motor pool, while the state Board of Public Utilities will contribute $1,000 from unspecified capital projects. More
