Shep On Fishing: Remembering 2008 trends could be helpful to anglers in 2009
Published: Jan 03, 2009

It can be interesting in the winter to look back at the trends that developed during the main fishing season. The entries for The Press Fishing Contest sometimes can provide a log for those of us who don't keep their own.

One of the main features of the 2008 season was the excellent black drumfish catch, particularly in Delaware Bay. The state-record 109-pound drum caught by Nick Henry of Millville on May 28 was obviously the headliner. Capt. Tate's Tackle Box in Dennisville weighed it.

According to Press contest entries, 11 of the 14 heaviest drum entered were caught between May 16 and June 7 in Delaware Bay. A 93-pound drum by Peter Fricano of Sea Isle City on May 23 at Tussey Slough took second-place honors. Moran's Dockside in Avalon was the weighstation.

John Brittin Jr. of Marmora won the Youth Saltwater division with a 69-pound, 8-ounce drum caught June 8. The second-place drum in Youth-Salt weighed 67 pounds and was caught by Brandon Poe of Elkton, Md., on May 31. Both were taken in Delaware Bay and both were certified by Jim's Bait and Tackle in Cape May. More
